FMV is a cut-based video editor and does not have a timeline. You apply effects, transitions and titles to each cut and not to the timeline as a whole. This often makes it easier to deal with complex cuts as each change to the video is dealt with separately in the interface and you do not need to deciper symbols on a timeline.
To preview your source 'cut' just click it in the cut list. To preview your new video with transitions and effects, just click the 'Preview' button on the main screen. You can also scrub through the preview with the slider below.
